A tale of two birds…
I was walking the beach near Haystack Rock, Bandon, when I heard a goose calling in a rather frantic manner. Curious a wandered closer. There was a Canada Goose at the base of the rock swimming back and forth. High over head were three more geese calling as if panicked. Finally, one of the upper birds flew down and the one at the base. It was then that it became apparent that the one in the surf was a young fledgling. It had, apparenty, wandered to the edge and decided to fly down. Once down, however, it found it could not fly back up.
I don’t know if it was the mother or the father that flew down. I don’t know how the story ends. I sat around taking pictures as long as I could and they eventually swam around the rock. Did it make it back up? Did it swim away and survive? I don’t know. It was an interesting demonstration of the hazards of nesting on the near shore rocks and of the care of a parent. And, I did get some fun images.
I hope you enjoy them.
The fledgeling as it paced back and forth at the base of Haystack Rock.
The fledgling with the parent behind it surfing in the shoreline waves.
I began this post a couple months ago but then life happened. Sorry for the delay.
Fall migration is well underway and there are birds on the beach. I hope to see you out there.
